Great! I just got a new HP laptop from staples and it has Vista. It came with an automatic upgrade to Windows 7. All I had to do was mail the receipt in.

After reading the review and the comments, I am excited to get my hands on Windows 7. The computer I was using before the laptop had Windows 97!

This is my last comment. It's been 4 days with Win7. Day 1 it was strange and new, I hated it. Now I'm a convert. I absolutely love Win7. Search which I initially hated, I've found is super fast, slick and easy. I love the tool bar feature that gives you a thumbnail view of the open windows so you can switch back and forth between them without reducing and inlarging like with XP and lower. While not intuitive to an XP user, Win7 has it' s own internal logic. Once your used to it, it's easy to use.

I was venting. I took a day to "play" with
Win7. I still think it could be more intuitive. I found a simple "search" and I really like it. I'm starting to think Win7 is cool and that I can grow to like it as much as XP. Making the switch wa like going to your favorite department store and find that all the departments are in different locations and men's clothing is now garments for people with Y chromosomes.

I just got a new laptop with Win 7. If you are moving from XP to Win7, it is like going from a sane wakeful state to a living nightmare. Nothing is familiar, names have changed (folders are now libraries), nothing is simple, nothing is intuitive. For instance, I want to do a search. In the start menu no search (that would be to simple and intuitive). I finally found a "search" in tiny letters hidden in "libraries" Can you simply enter the file name or key word, NOOOO (well maybe you can but I haven't found it yet). I could go on.
It makes me long for the days of MSDOS when I could do what I wanted, not what some jerk as microsoft thought I should want. OK a GUI interface was an improvement. Win98 was good, XP was great. Microsoft has "jumped the shark" with Vista and Win7. With an upgrade you should have to learn the improvements, not a whole new operating system. My time is valuable.

Hi Joe,

Great overview of Win 7, and it reflects my exexperience

I've been using the RTM version of Win 7 for a while now, and can't wait until Amazon delivers my copies.

The biggest thing I noticed was on my Sony Vaio laptop; vista was a resource hog that took forever to boot up, shut down, and was always reading or writing to the hard drive -- even when there was nothing going on.

The Win 7 install went well and the computer is now much snappier and much less frustrating.

I agree Mr. Thornley, I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate since the beta came out and I really like the way Microsoft streamlined Vista (which I didn't think earned as bad of a rep as it has). So far I've had a very positive run with Win 7, one of the things that slowed me down after I installed my new copy was running my antivirus (Kaspersky and Zone Alarm ended up bogging me down, but MS Security Essentials, AVG, and ESET Internet Security have each run fine so far)

The taskbar has made it easier to find all of the programs I tap into on a daily basis. I also use the search bar in the Windows menu and throughout the various folders after opening them - it's a much easier way to find things (and better than the Mac spotlight, since you can use it inside your explorer windows as well).

I guess the thing I like most about Windows 7 is that Microsoft seemed to be more focused on streamlining the OS than adding a lot of new bells and whistles this time around. (and the added benefit of XP Mode is that, hopefully, Microsoft will be able to remove XP Support from Windows 8 - come on people, it's a 10-year-old OS, time to move into the present ;) )
