The next Third Tuesday Ottawa will look at social media and health care reform

We live in an era in which our health care system must change. Diminishing resources, an aging population, extended life expectancies, enhanced treatment for illness. They all put pressure on our health care system.

The next Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW will tackle the question of whether social media help hospitals to do more with less. Ann Fuller, the Director of Public Relations at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), will present a perspective from inside the health care system on the important role social media can play in patient care, patient support, health research, education, training, advocacy, and more.

Third Tuesday is a great opportunity to hear about the latest developments in social media and to network with business and thought leaders. If you’d like to participate, click on this link to register online to attend Third Tuesday with Anne Fuller.

Thank you to our Third Tuesday sponsors

Third Tuesday is a community-oriented, volunteer-driven event. And we wouldn’t be able to bring great speakers like William Mougayar to Third Tuesdays across the country without the support of some like-minded sponsors. We’ve been lucky to have some great companies step up over the past several years to help us make Third Tuesday happen. Big thanks are due to CNW GroupRogers Communications, the Canadian Internet Registration AuthorityRadian6 and Cision Canada for making the 2011/12 Third Tuesday season possible.

We want students to be able to attend

I know that students live on tight budgets. If you are a student and would like to attend Third Tuesday, don’t let the admission fee stop you. Simply present your student ID card at the time you sign into Third Tuesday and we’ll refund your admission fee, courtesy of Thornley Fallis.

William Mougayar at Third Tuesday Toronto Storify-ed

William Mougayar shared the story of the founding and development of Engagio with the participants of Third Tuesday Toronto. I’ve storify-ed the highlights of the twitter stream during the event. (This was the second of two presentations William made this week. I also storify-ed the previous night’s presentation at Third Tuesday Ottawa.)

I think you’ll find many quotable nuggets here in both of these streams.

William Mougayar talks about engag.io at Third Tuesday Ottawa

William Mougayar is a serial entrepreneur, the founder of two social media startups, eqentia and engag.io. William appeared at Third Tuesday Ottawa #3 TYOW last night to share what he has learned in the process of developing these services.

I’ve known William for a couple years. And I’ve always been struck by his focus, optimism and perseverance – essential qualities for any entrepreneur. So, it was a truly nice experience to hear him talk about Engag.io – which I think is the right idea at the right time – a universal inbox for our social media conversations.

I Story-fied the highlights of the Twitter stream during the event. Enjoy.

William Mougayar: Becoming a social media entrepreneur

Social media has changed the way that we connect with our friends, with news and with organizations. It has opened up possibilities that we hadn’t even dreamed of 10 years ago.

Social media has also proven fertile ground for entrepreneurs with ideas. Canada has spawned some great social media companies – Radian6HootSuitePostRank,StumbleUponTungle, and more.

Behind every one of these success stories is an entrepreneur who had an idea and the persistence, energy and sheer determination to make it happen.

William Mougayar is the entrepreneur behind not just one, but two social media startups:Eqentia and Engagio. The first of these two startups, Eqentia, is billed as a “vertical news environment.”   It enables you to curate the content you care about from a variety of sources across the social Web. The newer company, Engagio, enables you to draw together all of your conversations from different social media into one place.

Less than two months after launch, Engagio has earned positive word of mouth and prominent backers such as Fred Wilson thanks to its simple but compelling proposition.

Developing a successful startup isn’t easy. If it were, we’d all be heading up successful companies. It takes a lot of luck and some smart decisions. But in the era of social, we see more and more of the people around us pursuing their dream, trying their hand at starting up a new business, at making their idea become reality.

So how did William Mougayar do it? You can find out at the next Third Tuesday Toronto #3TYYZ and Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW meetups. William will share his personal journey from idea to beta to seed funding. He’ll tell us about the dark nights of doubt, the highs of the Eureka moments and the grinding work that goes into that success.

This Third Tuesday will be for you whether you are a budding entrepreneur yourself, know some people involved in startups or just wonder as you use your favourite social app, “How did they do that?”

I hope you be able to join us that evening to hear from one of Canada’s true social media entrepreneurs, William Mougayar.

You can register to attend either on the Third Tuesday Toronto #3TYYZ or Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW websites

Jeff Jarvis brings his Public Parts to Third Tuesday

I’m really excited about this news: Jeff Jarvis is coming to Third Tuesday Toronto #3TYYZ and Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW for the Canadian launch of his new book, Public Parts: How Sharing in the Digital Age Improves the Way We Work and Live.

Blogger at Buzz Machine. Author of  What Would Google Do? Associate professor and director of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism. Co-host of This Week in Google with Leo Laporte and Gina Trapani and Leo’s TWiT netcast network. And now author of a new book, Public Parts.

Jeff will be coming to third Tuesday Toronto on a special day, Thursday, November 17, and to third Tuesday Ottawa on Friday, November 18. Yes, that’s third Tuesday on a Thursday and Friday.

This should be a great event and we’ve booked a larger hall so that we can accommodate as many people as possible. Still, if past experience is any guide, we’ll sell out. So if you’re planning to be in Toronto on November 17 or Ottawa on November 18, click over to the Third Tuesday Toronto or Third Tuesday Ottawa sites and sign up to meet and hear Jeff Jarvis.

And if you’re worried about getting a copy of the book, all attendees who sign up will receive a copy of public parts when they arrive at the event. So you’ll have your copy their to have autographed by the author.

Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW and Third Tuesday Toronto #3TYYZ with Jeff Jarvis. I hope to see you there.

Third Tuesday is back for Movember

Odd-looking, but for a good causeEvery year, men like me embarrass their wives, partners and friends during the month of November by failing to do something that they want us to do – shave. And why? Because simply by growing a moustache, we can remind people about a very important cause and raise money for it.

That’s the basic concept of Movember. Raising awareness and raising funds to fight prostate cancer.

Since it was founded in Australia five years ago, Movember has become a global movement. And Canadian men have been enthusiastic in embracing the opportunity to participate. The results are impressive. Movember Canada membership grew from 35,000 to nearly 199,000, and donations increased by 280%, to $23 million, good for #2 in the world.

It’s truly a case study of building an online community to do public good, across borders, across time zones, across oceans.

So, I’m really pleased that our October Third Tuesday Ottawa and Third Tuesday Toronto will feature leaders from the Movember movement. Peter Bombaci, the National Director of Movember Canada, , will speak to at Third Tuesday Ottawa #3TYOW on October 18 and Adam Garone, the CEO and co-founder of Movember, will speak at Third Tuesday Toronto #3TYYZ on October 19. They will talk about how Movember grew from its founding on the other side of the world in Australia to become a Canadian success story. How they used social media to spread the word and then to form an online community of mustachioed men who are prepared to look odd for a good cause.

As most people know, I lived through prostrate cancer myself – ten years and counting. So, I know from personal experience that this disease is not a death sentence. And more can be done to improve the prospects of men afflicted with this disease.

I hope that you’ll join us for this evening. It’s for a great cause. And to make it even more so, we will donate 100% of the admission proceeds to Movember. So come out to Third Tuesday Ottawa and Third Tuesday Toronto to hear about the Movember story. By attending you’ll be a contributor

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin to speak at Third Tuesday Toronto

André Marin

Ontario Ombudsman André Marin

In my experience, a very few Canadian government officials have really succeeded in using digital media to increase public engagement. André Marin, the Ontario Ombudsman is at the top of that short list. Not only is he personally active on Twitter and Facebook, but he has integrated social media into his offices research and reporting.

The best example of this was his investigation into the conduct of the police during last year’s G 20 meeting in Toronto. When announcing that investigation, the Ombudsman invited Ontarians to submit evidence that had been gathered using social media. During the investigation, he provided updates on his progress via Twitter. In fact, his tweet that he had concluded the research stage was broadly reported by traditional media as if he had granted interviews or issued a news release. And when he released the final report, his press conference was posted on YouTube in a shareable format.

So I’m very pleased that Andre Marin has agreed to be the guest speaker at Third Tuesday Toronto on June 21. That’s the day he’s releasing his annual report, in which he will be announcing his newest focus – promoting open government.

I know the Third Tuesday community is savvy to the potential – and the challenges – of open government. So, I’m looking forward to an evening of  intelligent, probing discussion of this initiative.

Now you can hear about what really mattered at SXSW from three social media leaders who were there. Keith McArthur, Dave Fleet, and Karen Geier have just returned from SXSW. What are the top trends we we should be looking for over the next year? What’s hot? What’s not?
